Academics

In Language Arts this week, we began our grammar unit on nouns.  We introduced the unit by playing a class favorite, Noun Scattergories.  We will continue with this unit for the next several weeks with a comprehension exam tentatively scheduled for December 3rd.  We also continued our preparations for the WordMasters Challenge on November 20th.  Students continued to practice identifying types of analogies and completing analogies.  Additionally, we continued to study the words on our WordMasters lists by playing Bingo and study games on Quizlet.  

In reading,  Miss O'Connor's class continued reading Running Out of Time by Margaret Peterson Haddix.  We are focusing on using context clues to understand new vocabulary words and making connections within the text.  Mrs. Nash's class took a comprehension test over one of three novels: The Cay, Island of the Blue Dolphins, or Hatchet.  Students then completed an in class project over the book.  Students will begin the novel The Watsons Go to Birmingham on Monday.

In social studies this week, we began preparing for our test over exploration. Students completed a study guide in class that we then went over together. We also spent time completing various review activities, and we will have our final in-class review on Monday. Students should be using their study guides to help them prepare for the test, which is next Wednesday, November 18^th.

In Science this week, we continued our unit over classification.  Students learned the 6 kingdoms of living things and practiced classifying organisms into each kingdom.  Students also learned the 7 levels of classification in order:  kingdom, phylum, class, order, family, genus, species.  We learned a song and a mnemonic device to help us remember.  We will continue our unit on classification for the next several weeks.
