**Third, Fourth and Fifth graders will take an active role in leading All School Chapel next Friday, November 13th. We had many interested fifth graders, so we did a drawing in each homeroom to determine our leaders for this chapel. You should have received an email if you child was selected to participate. We will have other chapel services later this year in which our floor will lead chapel, so there will be future opportunities for fifth graders to take part.
Academics
In Language Arts, we working on finalizing our creative writing projects through peer editing and revisions and individual conferencing with teachers. As we wrap up this unit, we will prepare to move on to our next grammar unit over nouns. We also continued our preparations for our WordMasters Challenge on November 20th by spending time learning about each word on our word list. Additionally, we have started our study of analogies, including types of analogies and strategies for understanding them.
In reading, students in Mrs. Nash's class finished one of three novels: The Cay, Hatchet, or Island of the Blue Dolphins. We will take tests over these novels on Monday and then begin a short in-class project. After completing our projects, we will begin our next novel study over The Watson's Go to Birmingham by Christopher Paul Curtis. Miss O'Connor's class began reading Running Out of Time by Margaret Peterson Haddix.
In social studies this week, we continued our exploration study. We learned about explorers to follow after Christopher Columbus first sailed to the Americas. We will take a test over this chapter on Wednesday, November 18th. Students will receive a study guide early next week to help them prepare for the test.
In Science this week, students presented their science expo projects to their classmates. We also began our next unit over classification.
