Academics

In language arts, we began our combined united on adjectives and persuasive writing. Students started the week with an adjectives pretest. Both classes then jumped into learning and discussing persuasive writing. We will work on drafting our persuasive argument over the next several weeks. While drafting is occurring students will also engage in several adjective lessons. They will then be challenged to integrate adjectives into their persuasive speeches.We also continued our final Word Masters Challenge. Each student has their packet and should be reviewing the words at home as well as school. 

In reading, Mrs. Nash's class we continued reading Jayhawker by Patricia Beatty. We have read through chapter seven of the novel. We focused on annotating while we read and utilizing comprehension strategies. Miss Laird's class continued working on their Literature circle unit.  Students are working on their second packet this week. The students are working in five different reading groups. Each group is reading a different novel and participating in a different literature circle. The different novels include, Daphne’s Book by Mary Downing Hahn, Wizard’s Hall by Jane Yolen, The Barn by Avi, Island of the Blue Dolphins by Scott O’Dell, and Ella Enchanted by Gail Carson Levine.  

In social studies, we learned about the U.S. Constitution. We focused on the different jobs of the three branches of government as they were described in the first three articles of the Constitution. Next week we will focus on the Bill of Rights. 

 

In science, we continued unit on space. This week we wrapped up the web-quest regarding our galaxy and focused on the planets in our galaxy. Then we continued learning the history of astronomy and how it has evolved over time. Finally we ended the week by beginning our discussion on stars. We learned what a star is and compared the sun to other stars. 

As we prepare for Exchange City, the students  focused this week with work in their businesses. The had a team building activity to help them learn to work together as a team and not just individuals doing their jobs for the business. Then the began to develop their business plan. This process consists of defining the role of the business, establishing roles for employees, creating a budget, and applying for a loan.
