Wednesday, May 6th ~ Middle School Book Fair**
*Standardized Testing begins on Monday! We have encouraged students to get lots of rest, eat good, healthy breakfasts, and bring one or two healthy snacks to eat during the day.
**Fifth graders participate in the Middle School Book Fair in the third floor commons instead of the book exchange they have done in past years around this time of year. Miss Laird's class will attend from 1:30-2:00, and Mrs. Nash's class will go from 2:00-2:30.
Academics
In language arts, we continued our persuasive essay writing projects. Students completed rough drafts, and we are in the process of using adjectives to enhance our writing. We will continue adding different types of adjectives to our work before continuing on to the editing and revising stage of our writing project. We also continued working on our WordMasters Challenge 3. Students can work on reviewing their words for our upcoming challenge on April 17th.
In reading, Mrs. Nash's class continued with Jayhawker by Patricia Beatty. We have read through Chapter 8 of the book, and we focused on the development of our main character and plot mapping. We also had small group discussions focusing on some of the historical events going on during this time period. Miss Laird's class is working on their third Literature Circle packet. The students are continuing to be responsible for creating their own assignments, rotating through reading styles and roles, and discussions. Next week will be the final week of this unit.
In social studies, we focused on the Bill of Rights. Students worked in groups to analyze the meaning of each of the first ten amendments. Next week, we will finish our study of the Bill of Rights and also work on setting up the laws we will have at Exchange City.

In science, we continued learning the life cycle of a star.
We discussed the difference between a small/ medium mass star and large/
massive mass star. We also compared the sun to other known stars. Next week we
will continue to discuss the different phases in the life cycle. Next Friday
will also be the enrichment project celebration. Those students that chose to
participate will share their projects with other students that chose to
participate. This will be from 3:30-4:45.
