Academics

In language arts, we continued our unit on nouns. This week we focused primarily on singular and plural possessive nouns. We also discussed letter formatting for both a friendly and business letters.  We will review for the test on Monday and we will test on Tuesday, November 18th. We will begin a letter writing project mid-week.

Students also continued in our WordMasters Challenge this week. We have started thoroughly going through each word to help the students learn the multiple meaning and how they can be used. We will take the challenge on Thursday, December 4th.

In reading, Miss Laird's class finished reading The Cay and Hatchet. We worked this week in stations. Students rotated through stations that included- Fluency, vocabulary, discussion, comprehension checks, visualization, characterization and summarization. We tested today and next week we will start a new novel.  Mrs. Nash’s reading class continued with their class novels this week. Students reading Hatchet have read through chapter 18 of their book, and students reading Running Out of Time have read through chapter 22. We will finish the books early next week and end the novel studies with a short in-class project.

In social studies this week, we began preparing for our unit test, which is next Friday, November 21st. Students completed a study guide in class and played a review game. Next week, we will continue to review with several different activities. Students have a Unit 2 Study Guide and Unit 2 Terms to Know that they should be spending time reviewing each night.

This week in science, we continued to work in our unit on classification. Next week we will finish the unit, and they will be given a project that will require them to create their own classification system, similar to Linnaeus. We also started second quarter current events. This quarter, current events look different. They will engage in searching for a current event article through a blog. They will be asked to read and respond to 2 current events each week. The link to the new current event blog can be found under helpful links.
