Academics
In language arts, we continued our unit on nouns. This week we focused primarily on using plural nouns correctly as well as common and proper nouns. We will wrap up this unit next week and students will take a Nouns Test on Tuesday, November 18th. We will begin a letter writing project following our nouns unit.
Students also began our WordMasters Challenge this week. Each student made a graphic organizer for one of the words from their list, and next week we will spend time in class learning the meanings of each of these words. Once they have their study packets, students should be spending time each night studying their words. We will take the challenge on Thursday, December 4th.

In reading, Miss Laird's class continued to read in Hatchet and
the Cay. The Hatchet group is on chapter 17 and The Cay group
is on chapter 18. Both groups will finish the books next week and we will test
over these books next Friday. We also spent time working on the skill of
determining importance and summarizing. We will continue to reinforce this
skill next week as we finish our novels. Mrs. Nash's class continued to work on their novels as well. Students reading Running Out of Time have read through chapter 14 of the novel, and students reading Hatchet have read through chapter 13. We worked to identify the author's characterization of the main characters as we read, and we also identified how the characters have changed.
In social studies, we are wrapping up our unit on the exploration and colonization of North America. We spent time learning about the first French colonies and completed a short in-class project about the Lost Colony of Roanoke. We will complete our study of the first English colonies next week before we begin preparing for our unit test, which will be Friday, November 21st.
This week in science, we finished science expo. The projects looks great and I can tell the kids are proud of their work. Thank you for all of your support at home. I know it can be less than ideal to turn your homes into a science lab. It is so great for the students to be able to independently learn based on their interests and we could not have done this without the parents' help and support. We are now going to continue with our classification unit. We started the Invertebrate Times. The students are responsible for researching a specific phyla and creating a classified ad in order to be part of this phylum. Next week we will also start second quarter current events.
