Our Christmas program is right around the corner. We will celebrate the season together on
Thursday evening, December 4th for a 7:00 p.m program. Students should plan to arrive by 6:40 to
meet home room teachers in the undercroft of the church. Dress is nice, church-type clothing in
CHRISTMAS COLORS –any jewel tones you see in Christmas lights are great. Ladies – dresses or skirts and tops/sweaters,
slacks outfits, anything festive and Gentlemen – slacks and a Christmas colored
sweater or shirt. Our final joint
rehearsals will be in the church on Tuesday, December 2nd and Wednesday,
December 3rd from 8:45-11:00. Please
avoid pulling students out during these rehearsals if at all possible. We have a very limited schedule to work with
all three grade levels and want to have the students feel very prepared!
Academics
In language arts, we finished our unit on nouns by taking a test on Tuesday. We also began our next writing project, which will involve writing two different types of letters. Students also continued to focus on preparing for our WordMasters Challenge. At this point, both groups have learned the meanings of all 25 words. We will continue to work with the words through several class activities, but students should be studying their WordMasters packets on a regular basis. We will take the challenge on Thursday, December 4th.
In reading, Mrs. Nash’s reading class finished Hatchet and Running Out of Time. In place of a final test, students completed an in-class project consisting of several pieces including plot mapping, vocabulary, and characterization. We will begin our next class novel, a nonfiction narrative by Peg Kehret called Small Steps. Miss Laird’s started reading Watson’s Go to
Birmingham by Chris Paul Curtis. We discussed some background information
on the time period earlier in the week. The book takes place in 1963 during the
civil rights movement. We started reading on Thursday and we will read chapters
2 and 3 next week.
In social studies this week, we spent several class periods reviewing for our Unit 2 test, which we took on Friday. Students worked in groups to visit several review stations, and we also played a class trivia game in preparation. We will begin Unit 3, which focuses on the original English colonies, next week. For this unit, students will be focusing entirely on an in-class project.
This week is science, we finished our classification unit!
Students worked all week on creating a classification system of their own. They
were asked to come up with a classification system similar to Linnaeus by creating-
Kingdoms, phylum, classes and species for a group of newly found aliens on a
planet in another galaxy. Fifth grade did not have as many species to classify
as Linnaeus so we do not have orders or families in our classification systems.
They will present their classification systems to the class on Monday and that
will Segway into our unit on space.
