Academics

In language arts, we continued our sentences unit by focusing on the differences between sentence fragments, complete sentences, and run-on sentences. Students will get to put what they learned to practice as we begin our next writing project that focuses on how each student plans to change the world. We will also focus on organization as we develop this five paragraph project. Students completed Wordly Wise 7 and took their spelling test on Friday. They can begin working on Wordly Wise 8, which will be due next Thursday. 

In reading, Mrs. Nash’s class read through Chapter 14 of The Watsons Go to Birmingham. As we read, we continued to focus on using our seven comprehension strategies to understand the text. We will finish the book on Monday in class and students will take a final test over the book on Wednesday.  Miss Laird's class started a split novel. The students had the opportunity to choose between Hatchet  by Gary Paulsen and The Cay by Theodore Taylor. Both novels have a survival theme and we will continue to work on the 7 comprehension strategies as we read these novels.

In social studies, students filmed their projects about "Who Really Discovered the Americas?" We shared these projects in class on Friday afternoon. It was quite impressive to see the hard work and creativity students put into this work! Several groups went above and beyond with props they chose to include in their project, so thank you to parents who supported their efforts. It was not a requirement of the project to include these props, but many groups seemed to have a great time with it. There are a few pictures below of groups working together. Next week we will begin our second unit over exploration and colonization in North America. 

This week in science, both classes completed their first unit test. Those students that scored below an 82% have the option to retake the test. They are responsible for letting me know they are planning to retake and schedule a day to come in the morning to retake. We started our new unit on classification. Next week we will go into more detail about the 6 kingdoms and the levels of the classification of living things system.
