Academics

In language arts, we began our second writing assignment. The students were given the prompt-  I plan to change the world by... This matches the theme of the fifth grade showcase so these writing pieces will be on display next Thursday at the showcase. We also continued this week with Wordly Wise 8. We encourage the kids to begin Wordly Wise over the weekend so they can review the words throughout the week. As always, the assignments are due on Thursday and the test will be on Friday. We will also continue our Sentences grammar unit next week in preparation for the unit test on Wednesday, October 22nd.

In reading, Mrs. Nash's class finished The Watsons Go to Birmingham and took a test over the novel. We also enjoyed the movie version of the book and spent time comparing the two. Next week, we will begin our next novel study, which will be a split novel. Some students will read Running Out of Time by Margaret Peterson Haddix and others will read Hatchet by Gary Paulsen. In Miss Laird's class we continue to read from Hatchet and The Cay. This past week we worked in literature stations and students reading The Cay should be on chapter 10 and students reading Hatchet should be on chapter 10.

In social studies, we spent time learning how to find latitude and longitude coordinates as our geography skill for our upcoming unit. We also started our second unit over the exploration and colonization of North America. We will spend the next several weeks on this unit.

This week in science, we started the exciting science expo project in fifth grade. I hope by now you have read through the packet. Thank you in advance for you support as your children begin their experimenting/investigating at home. The project has several due dates to help the students from becoming overwhelmed and to help with organization. Also, the kids will be given class time to work on the project for everything but the actual experiment. This must be conducted at home. If you have any questions regarding the science expo project please do not hesitate to ask.  While science expo is going on we will also we working on our unit on classification. This week we learned about the 6 kingdoms of living things and next week will discuss the classification of animals.
