It is hard to believe we are already a quarter into the school year! We have had a great start to fifth grade and looking forward to continuing to work with your children. We look forward to visiting with you at conferences next week.

Thank you for attending last night's fifth grade showcase! We were extremely proud of our students and their hard work. They put on an excellent show! Below is a link to the video that was shared during the performance last night.
Academics
In language arts, we completed a writing project focused on how each student plans to change the world. Hopefully, you had an opportunity to see these writing projects on display at the Fifth Grade Showcase on Thursday evening. We also resumed our sentences unit, which we will finish next week. Students have a test over this unit on Wednesday, October 22nd. They have a Sentences Reference Guide to help them prepare, and we also have a Grammar LiveBinder on the left side of this blog that students can use at home. The access code for this LiveBinder is: grammar. Another source students may use are pages 68-71 and 78-85 of the Language Arts Textbook. We also completed Wordly Wise 9. Because of our short week next week, students will have a little extra time to complete Wordly Wise 10. They were assigned the work this Friday, but it will not be due until Thursday, October 30th.
In reading, Miss Laird's class worked on character analysis. We looked at how to
identify information about the character’s personality and physical traits. We
discussed that sometimes the author will provide direct information about the
character but sometimes we have to infer and look for clues. Both students
reading Hatchet and The Cay practiced identifying character
traits of the characters in their novel. Mrs. Nash's class did an activity focused on identifying the plot of a story or text and also began their next novel unit this week. Some students are reading Running Out of Time by Margaret Peterson Haddix and others are reading Hatchet by Gary Paulsen. Both groups have read through chapter four of their respective novels.
In social studies, we continued with our study of Unit 2 by learning about how exploration in Asia and Europe expanded during the Middle Ages. We also focused on Spanish exploration of North America. Students have continued to review their geography skill for this unit, latitude and longitude by playing a class matching game.
This week in science, both classes
continued to discuss the classification of living things. We created a foldable
to help organize the information as we move through the classification system.
Next week we will focus on the kingdom of animals and how we organize animals
into different phylums and classes. We also continued to discuss science expo.
The kids should have their pre-lab rough draft completed by Tuesday. They will
have some time in class next week to work on their projects.
Parents, have you completed the ISACS survey?
We need every member of our community to complete the ISACS
(Independent School Association of the Central States) survey. We will
use the data to evaluate our performance and to plan for the
future. The survey is also required for reaccreditation. With
the survey, you can provide feedback on academic programs, extracurricular
programs, administrative departments, auxiliary services (e.g. extended day,
summer programs), and communications.
If you have children enrolled in more than one division (ECC,
lower school, middle school), you need to complete one survey per child.
Your views may vary by child, and we want to track feedback by
division.
The ECC serves toddlers through kindergartners.
The lower school serves 1st through 5th
graders.
The middle school serves 6th-8th
graders.
