Academics

In language arts, we in full swing working on our sentences unit. We reviewed and practiced types of sentences and we are currently working on subjects and predicates. We are looking at simple, complete, and compound subject and predicates. Next week we will move into sentence fragments and run-on sentences. We also completed week 6 of Wordly Wise. 

In reading, Mrs. Nash’s class read through Chapter 11 of The Watson’s Go to Birmingham. As we read, we continued to focus on using our seven comprehension strategies to understand the text. We also completed a fluency activity in which students read a passage, evaluated aspects of their reading fluency, and then set a goal for how they wanted to improve over the course of fifth grade. Miss Laird's class finished Running Out of Time this week. We focused on the plot sequence for this book. The students identified the problem, rising action, climax, falling action and resolution. Students also took a basic comprehension quiz over the novel as well. Next week we will begin a book preview for our next book. 

In social studies, we continued work on our in-class project, Who Really Discovered the Americas? Students worked in groups to develop of script for a documentary they can present to the class that “proves” a certain person or group of people were the first to discover North and South America. Students will film their documentaries in class next week, and we will share them in social studies classes next Friday, October 3rd. 

This week in science, we completed our first investigation. The students tested the absorbency of three different materials. The students were responsible for researching the topic, setting up the procedure, identifying variables, conducting the investigation, collecting and graphing data, and analyzing data to determine a conclusion. We also prepared for our first science test. This test will be held on Tuesday, September 30th. The test will cover the science process skills and steps of the scientific method. I will hold a review session on Tuesday morning before school at 7:30 for those that would like to attend. This is optional.
