*Presidents Unit- Our students hard work is starting to come together as we work to prepare for our Presidents Celebration. We will end this unit with a culminating event on February 12th from 2:00-3:15. We invite all parents to come celebrate their hard work and enjoy some refreshments. The Presidents Celebration will consist of each student giving a short speech about their president, a performance of several songs they have learned with Mrs. Everly in music class, and time to enjoy refreshments with their families. We will also have students individually share their online portfolios with their parents during this celebration.
Please Note: We have asked students to dress up for this event. Students may wear church attire such as slacks and dress shirts for boys and dresses, skirts, or dress pants for girls. Jackets or ties are optional and students may also choose to wear patriotic colors.
** For our Valentine's Day party, we are asking students to bring Valentines for their homeroom class. If they would also like to distribute Valentines to the other fifth grade class, they are welcome to; however, we ask if they bring a Valentine for any individual in the other class that they bring them for the entire class. We ask that students address the Valentines for their homeroom with at least the first name of their classmates and will give them a class list so that they can spell each name correctly.

The fifth graders started bringing their cuadernos home today. I'd like for them to go over the words for the clothing and to practice reading their scripts for the upcoming fashion show (more information regarding this fashion show coming next week!). We did not have time to check all of the scripts today but we will review and get a final draft on Wednesday. Please, remind your child that it is very important that notebooks come back to school on Wednesday.

Academics
In language arts, the students have been working hard to stay on schedule with the snow days this week. The students did a great job of working on their president's work from home. We have spent the end of the week finalizing research papers, speeches and uploading work to our online portfolios. We are very proud of the hard work our students have put into this unit so far and are looking forward to having them share this work with you on February 12th.
In reading, Miss Laird’s class has read through chapter 7 in Small Steps: The Year I got Polio. We are focusing specifically on the character development and how her experiences affect and change her throughout the novel. In Mrs. Nash’s reading class read through Chapter 13 of Jayhawker. As they read, they focused on summarizing by pulling the most important events of the chapters.
This week in social studies, In social studies, students learned about the First Continental Congress as well as the start of the Revolutionary War. We will focus on the most important battles of the war next week and analyze the differences between the Continental and British armies.
In science, we finished our classification unit. Rather than testing we did a final cumulative activity to wrap up the unit. They used notes they have created and collected over the course of the unit to help them analyze and think critically to answer a series of higher level questions. Next week after the president's celebration we will begin Cell Biology and eventually jump into the body systems.
