*Trish Madsen will be visiting with our fifth graders on Thursday, February 20th. Mrs. Madsen is a bully prevention specialist who has worked with St. Paul’s students for many years. We like to have her visit with our students as they’re entering adolescence and find that the students really enjoy her presentation style. She also shares wonderful information and strategies with the students. Trish will review what bullying is and help the students learn ways to handle bullying and/or negative social interactions.
Academics
In language arts, we finished our preparations for the Presidents Celebration. We also continued our work with WordMasters. We will have our WordMasters Round 2 challenge on Tuesday, February 25th, and we will spend time learning the words and preparing for the challenge over the next few weeks. Next week, we will also begin our grammar unit over Verbs. As always, students can use the LiveBinder for grammar link to the right of this page for extra support during this unit.
In reading, Mrs. Nash's class finished Jayhawker by Patricia Beatty. Students will take a test over the book on Wednesday, February 19th. We will do a short in-class project after finishing the test. Our next novel unit will be a literature circles unit. Miss Laird's class is on chapter 10 of Small Steps. We have
continued to look at Peg’s character traits and how events have changed Peg’s
perspective throughout the book.
This week in social studies, we focused on the first conflicts in the Revolutionary War. Students practiced taking notes independently when they read about Lexington and Concord. Then, we learned about how the colonists took over Fort Ticonderoga. Next week we will focus on other major battles of the war and will also look at the differences between the Continental and British armies. Students will take a test over this unit on Tuesday, March 4th. They may use their Revolutionary Timeline foldable as well as their Unit 4 Terms to Know to begin preparing for the test.
In science, we mixed things up a
bit to learn about the science of the Olympics. We looked at the basic physics
of figure skating, snowboarding and snow skiing. Next week we will dive in the
parts of an animal and plant cell.

the fun and be a helping hand to people in need.
