Unit- Our students hard work is starting to come together as we work to prepare for our Presidents Celebration. We will end this unit with a culminating event on February 12th from
2:00-3:15. We invite all parents to come celebrate their hard work and
enjoy some refreshments. The Presidents Celebration will consist of each student giving a short speech about their president, a performance of several songs they have learned with Mrs. Everly in music class, and time to enjoy refreshments with their families. We will also have students individually share their online portfolios with their parents during this celebration.
Please Note: We have asked students to dress up for this event. Students may wear church attire such as slacks and dress shirts for boys and dresses, skirts, or dress pants for girls. Jackets or ties are optional and students may also choose to wear patriotic colors.
** For our Valentine's Day party, we are asking students to bring Valentines for their homeroom class. If they would also like to distribute Valentines to the other fifth grade class, they are welcome to; however, we ask if they bring a Valentine for any individual in the other class that they bring them for the entire class. We ask that students address the Valentines for their homeroom with at least the first name of their classmates and will give them a class list so that they can spell each name correctly.

The fifth graders started bringing their cuadernos home today. I'd like for them to go over the words for the clothing and to practice reading their scripts for the upcoming fashion show (more information regarding this fashion show coming next week!). We did not have time to check all of the scripts today but we will review and get a final draft on Wednesday. Please, remind your child that it is very important that notebooks come back to school on Wednesday.

Academics
In language arts, students finished the rough drafts of their research paper and have worked in partners and individually to revise and edit their work. Students also began working on title pages and bibliographies for their paper. Next week, we will finalize each document, create our online portfolios, and write speeches for the celebration. We are very proud of the hard work our students have put into this unit so far and are looking forward to having them share this work with you on February 12th.
In reading, Mrs. Nash's class read through Chapter 11 of Jayhawker
by Patricia Beatty. This week, we had group discussions over the novel and continued
to practice our comprehension strategies.
Miss Laird’s class has read through chapter 4 in Small Steps: The Year I got Polio. We are focusing specifically on the character development and how her experiences affect and change her throughout the novel.

This week in social studies, students learned about the Boston Massacre including questions that still surround the event almost 250 years after it took place. We examined the trial of Captain Preston, the British officer in charge of the officers that fired into the crowd of colonists, and students decided if they thought he was guilty or not guilty of the crime with which he was charged. We also studied the Tea Act and the Boston Tea Party. Next week, we will focus on the First Continental Congress and the first battles of the war.
In science,
we worked on a project about classifying. The students
“discovered a new planet” and their job was to create a classification system
of the new creatures that were found on this new planet. Once they finished
their classification system 4 new creatures were discovered and they needed to
fit these newly discovered creatures into the classification system they
already created. This is similar to Linnaeus’s classification of living
organisms and the process scientists must go through when new living organisms
are discovered. Next week the students will present their classification system
to the rest of the class.

Bill Severns Returns! – Tuesday, February 11th

Author
and coach, Bill Severns returns to share his thoughts on what children truly
seek and need through their involvement in team sports. Bill shares valuable
insights and life lessons through his engaging, true stories gathered from his
own life experiences as a professional baseball player and little league coach.
Bill was a hit when he came to St. Paul’s the first time and we are pleased
that he has agreed to come again and help us kick off our spring sports season.
