*Presidents Unit- Students have been hard at work learning about their Presidents! We will end this unit with a culminating event on February 12th from 2:00-3:15. We invite all parents to come celebrate their hard work and enjoy some refreshments.

Academics
In language arts, we have continued the research process. The students have finished their outlines, developed their thesis statements and constructed an introduction. It was very excited for the students to be able to log-on to their very own Google Docs account! Thank you for getting the permission forms returned so quickly.
In reading, Miss Laird's class began reading Small Steps: The Year I got Polio by Peg Kehret. We will focus on reading strategies specifically when reading non-fiction texts. We have read through Chapter 8 of Jayhawker by Patricia Beatty. This week, we focused on identifying the most important events that have happened throughout the novel and continued to practice our comprehension strategies.
This week in social studies, students experienced firsthand the emotions some colonists felt when Great Britain began taxing them for items such as printed material, sugar, and tea. Students were told they were going to have to start paying 10 cents for every piece of paper they used. Understandably, many students felt outraged by this new “rule” (and they were quickly told this new rule was not real)! We then analyzed how the colonists felt when the British government began taxing them. We also examined how many colonists responded to the new laws by boycotting or even smuggling good into the colonies. Next week we will turn our attention to Boston as we learn about the Boston Massacre and the Boston Tea Party.
In science, we continued to look at the classification system for living organisms. This week we took a closer look at the species classified in the plant kingdom. We also learned about binomial nomenclature and discovered how species get their scientific name. Finally, the students were given an opportunity to review all classification with the new science LiveBinder. They can access this LiveBinder from the link on the right. The access code is science.

Communicating
With Your Child – The 5 Love Languages!
In
this session we will explore ways to enhance communication with your child
using the 5 Love Languages. Learn some useful ways to maximize communication
with your child. Jimmy Johns sandwiches provided or you are welcome to bring
your own lunch. Child care provided upon request for a small fee.
The Curriculum Design at St. Paul’s –
Tuesday, February 4th at 4:00 PM
Come
hear from the PLC (Professional Learning Community) about the curriculum review
process taking place across all divisions. Members of the PLC will provide an
overview of the curriculum design process as well information about Common
Core, Math and Language Arts essential learning outcomes, and 21st
Century learning objectives. We hope you will join the PLC to hear more about
this exciting process taking place at St. Paul’s.
Bill Severns Returns! – Tuesday, February 11th
at 4:00 PM
Author
and coach, Bill Severns returns to share his thoughts on what children truly
seek and need through their involvement in team sports. Bill shares valuable
insights and life lessons through his engaging, true stories gathered from his
own life experiences as a professional baseball player and little league coach.
Bill was a hit when he came to St. Paul’s the first time and we are pleased
that he has agreed to come again and help us kick off our spring sports season.
Bill’s book, Keepers of the Sandlot, is available for checkout through Mrs. Van
Thullenar or can be purchased at www.keepersofthesandlot.com.
These events will all be held in the North
