Academics
In language arts, we have continued to work on gathering information for our presidents research project. Students worked on creating note cards that they will use to write their paper. On Thursday, we began the process of developing an outline of our papers. Outlines are due Wednesday, January 22nd. Next week, students will compose thesis statements and begin writing the rough draft of their papers.
In reading, Miss Laird's class is finished their literature circles unit.
All groups finished their books and everyone is working on preparing a book review which will incorporate the work they produced throughout the novel. Next week, we will begin reading Small Steps: The Year I got Polio by Peg Kehret. Mrs. Nash's class has read through Chapter 6 of Jayhawker by Patricia Beatty. Throughout this novel, we will analyze how setting and point of view impact the story. We will also continue to practice reading comprehension strategies.

This week in social studies, we continued our unit over the American
Revolution. This week each student assumed the role of a person who lived during this time period. We examined the different views people had about whether or not the colonies should seek independence from England. We will use these view points as we examine the events that led up to the start of the war.
In science, we continued to look at the classification
system for living organisms. This week we took a closer look at the species
classified in the animal kingdom. Within the animal kingdom we looked at
classifying vertebrates and invertebrates. We also brought back current
events for the third quarter and we did our first one together as a class on
Friday. Next week, we will move into classifying organisms in the plant
kingdom.
