*Presidents Unit- As most of you know we started the Presidents unit this week. I hope all parents had a chance to look at the packet your child brought home. Throughout the next couple months the students will be working on different elements of the unit in several of their classes. We will end this unit with a culminating event on February 12th at 2:00. We invite all parents to come celebrate their hard work. During this time the students will have an opportunity to share all of their work with parents and friends. This is a very involved project and we will complete most work in class; however, if your student is gone they will be expected to make arrangements to complete the work they have missed. Thank you in advance for your cooperation. The end result is worth it!

Academics

In language arts, we are now full swing into the Presidents unit.* All students have picked their presidents, gathered their resources, created source cards, and have began creating note cards. This is a very involved research project so it is important the students do not get behind and stay up to date with the schedule. All students should be working on Wordly Wise lesson 12. This test will be held next Friday, January 17th.

In reading, Miss Laird's class is finishing up the literature circle unit. As students finish their books next week they will wrap up the unit with a mini project. In Mrs. Nash's class, we started our next class novel, Jayhawker by Patricia Beatty. This book is historical fiction set in Kansas and Missouri during the Civil War. We have read through chapter two of the book. Throughout this novel, we will analyze how setting and point of view impact the story. We will also continue to practice reading comprehension strategies.

This week in social studies,  we started our unit over the American Revolution. This week we used map skills to view North America around 1750. We also created a foldable timeline that we will use as our study guide for the unit. Finally, we learned about the French and Indian War. Next week we will identify the effects the French and Indian War had on the English colonies in North America and learn about other events that led to the start of the American revolution.

In science, we have started a new unit on living organisms. We began by learning about classifying and how we use it in everyday life. Then we worked on learning the classification system of living organisms and the 6 types of Kingdoms. Next week we will work our way through the classification system.
