Academics

In language arts, we finished our unit over sentences and took the test on Tuesday. Then, we reviewed two traits of writing: ideas and word choice. We will be focusing on these traits as we begin our next writing project, which is a creative writing story. Student have selected a genre, main character, conflict, and point of view to use in their story, and we will begin working on rough drafts of these projects next week.  Students also completed Wordly Wise #8 and took the spelling test on Friday. They can begin working on Wordly Wise #9, which will be due next Thursday. This is the last Wordly Wise we will complete for awhile as we will begin WordMasters the week of October 21st.

In reading, both classes are in the process of starting new novels. Mrs. Nash's students decided to read either Hatchet by Gary Paulsen or Running Out of Time by Margaret Peterson Haddix.  Students who selected Hatchet have read through chapter three of the book, and students who selected Running Out of Time have read through chapter four. Both groups focused this week on using context clues to find the meanings of unknown words as they read. Miss Laird's students finished Running Out of Time and took a comprehension quiz. They also previewed and picked their next book. The students were able to choose between Hatchet by Gary Paulsen and The Cay by Theodore Taylor. We will start both books next week.

In social studies, students finished their video projects. Each group developed a movie to prove that a certain individual or group was the first to discover the Americas. Classes shared these projects on Thursday and Friday. It has been quite enjoyable to see the effort and creativity groups have put into their work! We ended the project with each student deciding who they believed to be the first to discover America. We will start next week by focusing on understanding and using latitude and longitude, and then we will begin our next unit on the exploration and colonization of North America.

In science this week the students were assigned their science expo project. This is the final scientific method assignment, and students will be working on this both at home and at school. They were given a packet with all of the information and due dates for this project on Tuesday. The final project will not be due until November 19th. Although, we will spend time working on this project at school I am asking that the actual experiment be done at home because of materials, space and time. So, thank you in advance for your help with this. The first due day is next Thursday October 17th and they will need to have an experiment topic picked. We have spent time in class researching and brainstorming different possibilities for an appropriate topic so they should have an idea already. Next week we will kick off our unit on space. They have all been given their access codes in order access the text book on line and I have asked that they keep this information in their trappers. However, below is the link as well.
