Academics
In language arts, we continued to work on our creative writing assignments. Both classes have been working on developing their ideas for their stories. Both classes have also started writing their rough drafts. The students have been encouraged and expected to use lots of detail and strong adjectives throughout their stories. We will continue to work on rough drafts and begin editing next week. Also next week we will be taking a break from Wordly Wise because we will be starting Word Masters on Monday.

In reading, both classes continued to read the books they chose. Both classes focused on solving the meaning of unfamiliar words within a text by using context clues and identifying the elements within a story map.We will continue to focus on identifying story elements as we read through each book. In Mrs. Nash's class students reading Hatchet have read through chapter 6 of the novel, and students reading Running Out of Time have read through chapter 7. In Miss Laird's class the students read through Chapter 3 in both Hatchet and Running Out of Time.

This week in social studies, we spent some time learning how to use latitude and longitude to find locations of places around the world. We played latitude and longitude bingo, and students became very good at finding map coordinates! We also began our next unit over exploration and colonization by learning about how people in both Europe and Asia began learning about other parts of the world. Next week we will continue this unit by focusing on the groups who began exploring North America.

In science, we began our unit on space and started with the study of stars, specifically the sun. While we are working on space and the stars the students are also working very hard on their science expo projects at home. They have all gotten their topic approved by me and most have gotten approval from parents. Next week they will be given the template to begin the next step and work on writing up the lab report.
