The fifth graders were awesome with their buddies and clearly showed lots of school spirit (fifth grade won the spirit award and will be able to celebrate with a doughnut breakfast with Sporting Kansas City's, Jimmy Nielsen). Here are a few pictures we captured from the event!
Academics
Both reading classes continued to read their class novels and practiced their reading strategies as they read. Miss Laird's class read through chapter 22 of Running Out of Time by Margaret Peterson Haddix. They will finish the book on Monday and have a test over the book on Thursday October 10th. They end of next week the students will have a book preview and be asked to choose between two books for their next novel study. This week in reading we took a test over the novel Holes and then enjoyed the movie version of the book. Next week, students will select one of two books for our next novel study. Some students will read Running Out of Time by Margaret Peterson Haddix and others will read Hatchet by Gary Paulsen.
In social studies, students began working on a group
project. After analyzing three different theories about who discovered America,
groups began developing a documentary to support one of the three theories.
Some groups are arguing that Christopher Columbus discovered America, some are
arguing that it was the Vikings, and others are arguing that it was the
Chinese. Students will finish filming their documentaries in class at the
beginning of next week and we will share video presentations on Thursday and
Friday.
This week in science we spent the week preparing for the first unit test over the scientific method. Today the students completed their test. Next week we will spend time going over the test and introducing our new unit about space. The students will also will have access to the text book on line and we through how to do this process in class. They will be given directions to access the textbook as well as their password to keep in their binders.
