Academics
In language arts, students are learning about adjectives. For this grammar unit, each student is creating a piece of creative writing and will incorporate many different types of adjectives in their story. As they finish their rough drafts, students will color code their writing to show how they have used adjectives in their stories. Final copies of this writing assignment will be due Thursday, April 25th. Our next unit in language arts will focus on adverbs.
Both reading classes began a book contract this week. With the book contract, students have an opportunity to select a book from five choices. They will read the book in class, and then complete several activities showing their understanding of the novel. Students will put all of these activities together in a LiveBinder at the end of this unit. Class time will be given to complete each step of the book contract process. All work related to the Book Contract will be due Thursday, May 16th.
In science, students are learning about the earth's resources. They have finished the chapter in the textbook and are now reviewing for the test. They will have a test over this chapter on Tuesday, April 23rd.

In social studies, students finshed learning about the Bill of Rights. They will take a small quiz over the Constitution and Bill of Rights on Thursday, April 25th. They also began working on a unit project that will allow students to explore a particular part of American history between 1787-1760. Students selected groups and topics this week and started their research using the textbook as well as internet resources. Topics for this project include: the Louisiana Purchase, the War of 1812, the age of Andrew Jackson, the Industrial Revolution, and the Mexican War. All work for this project can be completed in class. These projects will be due Tuesday, May 7th.
Social Studies Enrichment Project
Students just learned about an exciting enrichment opportunity in social studies. This project is very similar to the science enrichment opportunity Mrs. Jones offered in February. Students have a chance to research a topic relating to the Civil War and share their findings with some of their classmates on Friday, May 10th after school from 3:45-4:30.
Citizenship and Behavior
At St. Paul's, we consistently work to be good citizens and make positive behavior choices.
In an effort to encourage our fifth graders to continue to work hard in these areas, we have started a color strip system for the second half of fourth quarter. Each student has made a color strip that contains all colors of the rainbow. Each day, they begin on "purple." If a student is redirected, he or she is asked to move down a color. If a student has to be redirected 4-5 times and ends up on "red" or "orange," they are asked to write a note home. If they end on purple every day throughout the week, they earn an extra twenty minute recess on Friday. It is our hope that all of our students get to enjoy this extra time outside this spring (and we certainly hope the weather starts seeming spring-like as well!).
