Academics
In language arts, we finished our unit on adjectives. Students turned in their creative writing assignments to show how they use adjectives in their writing. We also started our next grammar unit, which will focus on adverbs and pronouns. We are also continuing to learn our last set of WordMasters words, and students will compete in the final challenge of the year on Friday, May 3. We will resume Wordly Wise the same day, and Wordly Wise #18 will be due Thursday, May 9th.
Both reading classes have continued to work on their book contracts. Each day they complete an assigned portion of their book and complete a daily journal on what they read. After they finish the novel, students will put all of several activities together in a LiveBinder. We will guide them on how to do each step of this process in class, and time will be given to complete each part. All work related to the Book Contract will be due Thursday, May 16th.
In science, students took a test over the earth's resources. They also started a unit on stars and galaxies.

In social studies, students contined working on a unit project that will allow them to explore a particular part of American history between 1787-1760. Students are finishing their research on their assigned topics and are starting to put together their final products. All work for this project can be completed in class. These projects will be due Tuesday, May 7th.
Social Studies Enrichment Project
Students just learned about an exciting enrichment opportunity in social studies. This project is very similar to the science enrichment opportunity Mrs. Jones offered in February. Students have a chance to research a topic relating to the Civil War and share their findings with some of their classmates on Friday, May 10th after school from 3:45-4:30. Students may choose any topic relating to the Civil War and can choose how they would like to present their findings. Snacks will be provided during this after school activity.
Citizenship and Behavior
At St. Paul's, we consistently work to be good citizens and make positive behavior choices.
In an effort to encourage our fifth graders to continue to work hard in these areas, we have started a color strip system for the second half of fourth quarter. Each student has made a color strip that contains all colors of the rainbow. Each day, they begin on "purple." If a student is redirected, he or she is asked to move down a color. If a student has to be redirected 4-5 times and ends up on "red" or "orange," they are asked to write a note home. If they end on purple every day throughout the week, they earn an extra twenty minute recess on Friday. It is our hope that all of our students get to enjoy this extra time outside this spring.
