Middle School Transition Night
I want to invite you to our Middle School Transition Night on April 4.  This will be an excellent opportunity to meet the middle school teachers, have an exposure to the middle school curriculum, listen to reflections on middle school students and to ask questions.  For many students and parents, the years in middle school are some of the most amazing years in a person’s life.  This evening will offer some insight into characteristics of adolescent behavior and development.  The evening will begin with a brief presentation of the new 1:1 iPad initiative.  We will meet in the third floor commons at 6 pm.  I look forward to seeing you April 4.
 Sincerely,
Ted van Thullenar
Head of Middle School

Academics
In language arts, students have been busy wrapping up their study of verbs, getting back into a regular schedule with Wordly Wise, and practicing their interpersonal skills while interviewing for Exchange City jobs.  The test over verbs will be Wednesday, March 13.  A LiveBinder has been created that reviews all vocabulary associated with our verbs unit and that includes links to games that allow students to practice skills related to this unit. The link is http://www.livebinders.com/play/play/797277 . The access key code is grammar. We hope the students visit it and take advantage of this great resource.  Students are currently working on Wordly Wise 16 which is due Thursday, March 14.  The spelling test will be Friday, March 15.

This week in reading, Mrs. Jones' students continued reading their next class novel, Holes by Louis Sachar. Mrs. Nash's students continued reading Jayhawker by Patricia Beatty.

In social studies, students concluded their study of the Revolutionary War.  They will have a test over this unit on Friday, March 15th.  They should use their foldable and graphic organizers they created in class in order to prepare for this assessment.

This week in science we continued to study plants. We reviewed the three main ways plants reproduce and we also studied how both DNA and environment determine and affect a plant's growth.  Students were encouraged to go home and experiment with different seeds and plants this Spring. Students are also investigating whether seed placement affects the direction of root growth. We have been observing seeds we planted and how their root structures have developed over the past few weeks.  There will be an exam over this unit on Tuesday, March 26.  This is the Tuesday after we return from Spring Break, and, while the timing is far from ideal, we are encouraging students to begin preparing early so they are prepared ahead of time and can still make the most of their Spring Break. Snow days, WordMasters, Exchange City, Good Friday, and Spring Break all made scheduling this assessment challenging.
