Happy Snow Day & Request for Interview Volunteers

We hope you are nice and warm inside enjoying your extra time with family.  Below is a reminder of the work you were asked to complete in order to make up for time we lost at school due to the snow day.
  • Visit the Science Current Event Blog and post a comment answering at least 5 questions including question 9 & 10 over organ transplantation.
  • Read chapter 4 lesson 2 in your science book over the important jobs stems and roots do for plants.  Then, complete the worksheet over these pages.
  • Read pages 161-163 in your social studies book and take notes on April, May, and June 1775.  This will allow you to complete three sections of your foldable: Lexington & Concord, Fort Ticonderoga, and the Battle of Bunker Hill.
  • Complete your math packet.
  • Compose a rough draft of your Exchange City resume. Be sure to use the example provided.
Please take your time and do your best on each assignment.  These assignments will be part of your final third quarter grades.  Remember, the quarter ends this Friday.

Once you finish your work, kick back and relax!  Snuggle up with a good book or hit the snow to build the world's largest snowball or an awesome fort!  Enjoy!

Thank you so much to all the parents and students for the wonderful baby shower on Monday!  I absolutely loved the book from the students and found myself laughing out loud at the advice they shared.  The baby pictures were adorable!  Thank you so much for the diaper cake, snacks,  gifts, and well wishes!

Volunteers Needed !!!
Exchange City job interviews will be held Wednesday, March 6th from 8:45-10:30. For many years St. Paul's has asked parents to volunteer to assist with the interview process. We would love to continue this tradition. If you would be willing and available to interview students the morning if March 6th, please let us know by visiting the sign-up genius link below and signing up. We are hoping to have about sixteen volunteers to help with this activity, and so far we only have four or five volunteers for the interview process.  Please be sure to sign up on the sign up genius if you are interested.  We thank you in advance for your time and support!

There will also be an opportunity for seven parents to accompany us to Exchange City on April 9th. We had numerous parents interested!  We will enter all the names in a drawing and let you know on Friday, March 1 if your name was drawn.  Thanks for your enthusiasm and support with this unit.

Exchange City Preparations Begin!
We have begun preparing for Exchange City! Throughout this unit, students will study economics and how a city works. Students will learn to write and deposit checks, create resumes, interview for jobs, and many more valuable skills. Each student will be assigned a job within a specific business and will work with their partners to write a business plan, apply for a loan, and sell goods and/or services in order to pay off their business loan. We will visit Exchange City on Tuesday, April 9th.

Academics
In language arts, students took the second WordMasters test.  We've resumed our study of verbs as well.  Students received Wordly Wise 14 on Wednesday, February 20.  The packet is due Wednesday, February 27.  The test over Wordly Wise 14 words will be Thursday, February 28.  This is a change from our normal routine of spelling tests on Friday.

This week in reading, Mrs. Jones' students are beginning their next class novel, Holes by Louis Sachar. Mrs. Nash's students practiced non-fiction comprehension strategies with a passage about George Washington Carver and also began a Reader's Theater activity that they will finish this week.  They will also begin their next class novel, which will be Jayhawker by Patricia Beatty. Both classes will celebrate Black History Month later in the week by having a reading aloud lesson and reading party.

In social studies, students learned about the Intolerable Acts and the First Continental Congress.  We are now exploring the the start of the war. The test over our current unit will be Friday, March 15th.

This week in science students began studying plants. We reviewed parts of a leaf and the process of photosynthesis and students are now studying the jobs of roots and stems.  Students are investigating whether seed placement affects the direction of root growth.  We will continue to observe seeds we planted and how their root structures develop over the next couple of weeks.  Students also are visiting the science current event blog and posting their thoughts and reflections over recent scientific happenings.
