Thank you for joining us for an exciting week!
We are so proud of the work the fifth graders put into our Presidents Unit. They enjoyed sharing their products with you on Wednesday afternoon and we hope you enjoyed the show! We also want to thank all of you who came to help us celebrate Valentine's Day on Thursday afternoon. The activities, games, and treats were enjoyed by all and we are grateful for all of the wonderful parents who help out at these parties.

Exchange City Preparations Begin!
We are excited to begin preparing for Exchange City on Tuesday, February 19th. Throughout this unit, students will study economics and how a city works. Students will learn to write and deposit checks, create resumes, interview for jobs, and many more valuable skills. Each student will be assigned a job within a specific business and will work with their partners to write a business plan, apply for a loan, and sell goods and/or services in order to pay off their business loan. We will visit Exchange City on Tuesday, April 9th.
Volunteers Needed
Exchange City job interviews will be held Wednesday, March 6th from 8:45-10:30. For many years St. Paul's has asked parents to volunteer to assist with the intervew process. We would love to continue this tradition. If you would be willing and available to interview students the morning if March 6th, please let us know by visiting the sign-up genius link below and signing up. We are hoping to have about sixteen volunteers to help with this activity.

There will also be an opportunity for seven parents to accompany us to Exchange City on April 9th. If you are interested in joining us for this field trip, please look for the letter we will send home with students on Tuesday and return the bottom portion to school by Thursday, February 28th.
Academics
In language arts, students finished their Presidents research project and finished preparing speeches before presenting their work to you on Wednesday. We will resume our grammar unit on verbs next week and will also finish preparing for the second WordMasters Challenge, which will be held Monday, February 25th.
This week in reading, Mrs. Jones' students finished reading Jayhawker by Patricia Beatty. They will take a test over the novel on Tuesday, February 19th and will then begin their next class novel, Holes by Louis Sachar. Mrs. Nash's students practiced non-fiction comprehension strategies with a passage about George Washington Carver and also began a Reader's Theater activity that they will finish early next week. Later in the week they will begin their next class novel, which will be Jayhawker by Patricia Beatty. Both classes will celebrate Black History Month later in the week by having a reading aloud lesson and reading party.
In social studies, students learned about the Intolerable Acts and the First Continental Congress. Next week, we will explore the start of the war. The test over our current unit will be Friday, March 15th.
This week in science students began studying plants. We reviewed parts of a leaf and the process of photosynthesis.
