September 17th-21st

We had another great week in fifth grade!

Students took their first science test on Monday. We also used the scientific method to complete experiments using Sham-Wows. Students will be beginning their work on the Scientific Expo in the next few weeks.

This week in social studies we reviewed for our upcoming test. We completed a study guide in class, and students worked in groups to participate in activities at several review stations. The test is on Tuesday, September 25. Students are encouraged to spend time reviewing their study guide and Unit One Terms to Know. They may also access quizzes and games through our online textbook website  (http://macmillanmh.com/socialstudies/2009/student).

Both classes are continuing to work through their class novels.  Mrs. Nash's class has read through Chapter 31 of Holes by Louis Sachar and Mrs. Jones's class is finishing Shiloh.  Both classes are continuing to practice the reading strategies and use post its to monitor their thinking while reading. Students should continue to work on book reports on their own time. The book reports are due Wednesday, October 10.

Students began their first grammar unit of the year, which focuses on sentences. This week we focused on types of sentences, complete sentences and sentence fragments, and compound and simple sentences.  Students also completed Wordly Wise 5 and are now working on Wordly Wise 6 which is due Thursday, September 27.  The test over these words will be Friday, September 28.
