September 24 - September 28

Below are some of the highlights of this week as well as some of the activities to look forward to in the upcoming week.

• In social studies students took a test over Native Americans.  We were extremely proud of the effort they put forth in preparing for the exam.  Students will now be working on a project to answer the question, "Who really discovered America?"  All work for this project will be done in class.
• Students conducted electromagnet experiments in science this week.  They worked in small groups to write a procedure and hypothesis, identify variables, and gather data.  For the next two weeks students will be working on the Science Expo.  Please see the information below for more details about this project.
• Both fifth grade classes are wrapping up their class novels.  5J took a test over Shiloh this week and are now enjoying the movie version of the book.  They will finish the movie and continue working with vocabulary words from the novel next week.  5N will finish reading Holes on Monday and will have a test over the novel on Thursday, October 4.
• Students will have a test over the first language arts unit on Wednesday, October 3.  They don't receive study guides for language arts tests, but should use pages 68-71 and 74-85. The first set of pages will list the topics on the test and will give practice sentences for each concept.  If a student finds a particular concept challenging they should go back and review that topic.  Then, he or she will find several more practice sentences for that concept on the second set of pages.

Science Expo

Students will spend the next two weeks in science working on a small science fair project.  They will select a topic, write a lab report, conduct the experiment, collect and chart and/or graph data, and create a display board highlighting their experiment.  Students will be bringing home a packet that provides more details about this unit.  The majority of this project will be done in class, except for the actual conducting of the experiment which should be done at home.  The project has been broken down into smaller steps to help students manage their time.
