February 20th - February 24th

It was wonderful to see all of you Friday, February 17th to celebrate the culmination of the fifth grade President's unit.  The students worked extremely hard on their papers, display boards, and speeches and we appreciate all of your support in helping make this unit possible.  After celebrating Presidents' Day on Monday, students worked hard to prepare for Wednesday's WordMaster test and on their other units of study.  Below are some of the highlights from the week.


In Language Arts, students took the second WordMaster test.  They are also continuing their study of verbs.  There will be a test over the verbs unit on Wednesday, March 7th.  Students should be busy working on Wordly Wise 15 which is due Thursday, February 23rd.


Mrs. Jones's class is finishing the novel Jayhawker by Patricia Beatty.  They will take a test over the novel towards the end of the week.  Mrs. Nash's class has finished their class novel, Small Steps:The Year I Got Polio and will be reading Jayhawker next.

This week in social studies students have continued studying the American Revolution. Each student was either a patriot, a loyalist or a moderate as they took on the role of a revolutionary character.  We learned about how the colonists responded as the British began taxing them for several things.  Each class even had a “sugar smuggler” and our “Colonial Governors” had to determine who was the guilty colonist. Depending on their role, students had to determine how they would have felt about being taxed and how they felt about someone breaking the law by smuggling. This week we will learn about how the Revolutionary War started.

Students have been busy learning about plants, photosynthesis, and plant reproduction.  There will be a test over this chapter on Tuesday, March 6th.
