A Busy Start to the New Year!

We have had a great week back to school in fifth grade! January will continue to be a busy month so be sure to check out the Upcoming Events to see a full list of all of the upcoming activities.

On Tuesday afternoon, students welcomed President Harry S. Truman to St. Paul's! Truman spoke to the students about his life and Presidency and helped us prepare for our unit. Students also selected their president on Tuesday. This week they began the research process by gathering sources. We will type up our Works Cited pages and begin note cards next week. Note cards will be due Tuesday, January 17th.

Save the Date! Our President's Celebration will be on Friday, February 17th at 2:45. Parents are invited to come celebrate with the students as the share the information they have learned over the course of the unit.

In social studies students completed a brochure on a specific group of colonies. They learned about the characteristics of the New England, Middle or Southern colonies including the economy, reasons for settling in the colonies and the daily life of settlers. Students will share their brochures with the class next week.

Science classes have spent the week preparing for their next test, which will be Tuesday, January 10th. Students have a study guide to use to prepare for the test and may review Chapter 2 in their textbooks.

Mrs. Nash's students watched the movie version of Shiloh this week and practiced nonfiction comprehension with some short reading excerpts. They will begin Small Steps:The Year I Got Polio by Peg Kehret on Monday. Mrs. Jones's class began reading Jayhawker by Patricia Beatty, which is a historical fiction novel set during the Civil War.
The fifth grade students started shadowing with the sixth graders this Wednesday.  They attended middle school chapel and a few middle school classes.  Students will continue shadowing Monday through Thursday through the month of January.
St. Paul's will have a series of Bully Prevention Workshops for students on Tuesday, January 24th and Wednesday, January 25th.  Fifth grade will attend a workshop on Tuesday at 2:30.  In addition to the student meetings, St. Paul's is offering a Parents' workshop on Thursday, January 26th at 7 pm in the North MPR.  If you would like to attend the  Parent Workshop, please RSVP to lvan@speds.org.
