Our thoughts and prayers are with the Wetzel family as they work through this extremely difficult time.
Academics
In Language Arts, we started a new creative writing project in class. Students select their main character, genre, point of view, and conflict from a list of options as they develop their story. For this writing project, we are focusing on the traits of ideas and word choice. Rough drafts for our creative writing are due Monday, October 26th.
In reading, students in both classes are reading one of three novels: The Cay by Theodore Taylor, Hatchet by Gary Paulsen, and Island of the Blue Dolphins by Scott O'Dell. As they read, students are completing a reading response journal. In addition to their response journals, they are participating in discussions and regularly monitoring comprehension.
In social studies this week, students shared their "Who Really Discovered the Americas" documentaries. We further discussed the theories, and also talked about how information can be presented with bias so we have to decide if a source is really reliable before taking it as pure fact. Next, we are moving into our unit on exploration and colonization in North America.
In Science this week, students worked on their Science Expo. Students will apply the scientific process skills they have learned in class to conduct their own scientific experiment. Final lab reports are due Monday, October 26th and posters are due Wednesday, October 28th.
