*We invite you to join us for our Presidents' Celebration on Wednesday, February 11th at 2:00 pm in the North MPR. Students will give speeches, sing patriotic songs, and share their online portfolios that showcase all of their work from the unit. We will also enjoy cupcakes and punch. The celebration will last until around 3:15. We ask that students dress up for this celebration. For boys, this may be slacks and a collared shirt. Ties are optional. Girls may wear dresses or dress pants with a nice top. We hope to see you there!
**In fifth grade, we ask students to prepare Valentines for each person in their homeroom class. We ask that they put names on the Valentines and have given them class lists so they can spell names correctly. Students are welcome to also bring Valentine's for the other class; however, we ask that if they choose to do so, that they have enough for everyone in the other class.
***The annual Pancake Breakfast will be held February 17 in the school cafeteria from 7:00-8:30 in the morning. This breakfast, sponsored by the 8th grade, serves as a fund raiser for the school and culminates with a class gift presentation during the graduation ceremony in May.
Academics
In language arts, we have continued working on our Presidents Unit. Students finalized their research papers, including the title page, report, outline, and bibliography. We spent most of the week focused on revising and editing our papers. Next week, we will write speeches and work on our online portfolios.
We also spent time reviewing our WordMasters words for our upcoming challenge. Students will take the challenge next Thursday, February 5th, so they should be spending time studying their words each night.
In reading, Mrs. Nash's class continued through our literature circle unit. At this time, each group is about halfway through their respective novels. In reading, Miss Laird's class finished the Watson’s go to Birmingham unit this week. The students tested over the novel on Monday and we watched the movie on Tuesday/ Thursday. While watching the movie, they watched for similarities and differences between the novel and movie. We wrapped up the unit with a discussion about the story’s plot sequence. We also started our new novel Small Steps by Peg Kehret. We discussed some background information about Polio and 1950’s before we begin reading next week.
In social studies, we continued with our unit on the American Revolution. Each student assumed the role of a person living during this time period and read about themselves to the class. We then discussed and determined where each person would fit on the political spectrum: radical, liberal, moderate, conservative, or reactionary. We also had a "sugar smuggler" in our room one day that our Royal Governors had to find and accuse. We will use these roles as we complete several activities over the next few weeks in class.
In science, we are learning the Human Body systems. This week we focused on the Circulatory system. The students learned about blood vessels and blood. We ended this system by learning about the flow of blood through the heart and lungs. This will transition us into the respiratory system. We will focus on the respiratory system next week. There will be a test over the human body systems on Friday, February 20th.
