Academics
In language arts, we completed our third wordly wise lesson. This was the first week students were responsible for completing the entire lesson on their own, and it was due Thursday. Students took the test on Friday and were assigned Wordly Wise 4 on Friday. We have encouraged students to start on their Wordly Wise work over the weekend or early in the week so they are not overloaded with a lot of work on Wednesday evenings. This also allows them to come to us with any questions they have before the work is due. We also worked on our first writing project, a personal narrative. We will finish this writing project next week by going through the revising and editing process and then finishing final copies.
In reading, Mrs. Nash's class read chapters three and four of The Watson's Go to Birmingham. We also learned our process for literature group discussions and worked on vocabulary. Miss Laird's class is on chapter 10 of Running Out of Time and we focused on the comprehension strategy of visualizing. Students in both classes also received their first quarter book reports. They should be working on selecting a Mark Twain award book for their report as they need to have their selection to their reading teacher by Wednesday, September 10th. Title pages are due Friday, September 12th and the entire book report is due Friday, October 10th. Students have received specific guidelines for completing this report.
In social studies, students learned about how Native Americans in the Southwest, the Plains, and the Eastern Woodlands survived in their regions. We also started working on our study guide for our unit one test. We will complete this study guide together in class next week, and then will spend the remainder of the week reviewing for the test. Students should spend time preparing for this test in advance.

*Pet Blessing:
The Pet Blessing will take place on the upper field at 8:30
on Friday, September 19th. While live animals are welcome in all
grade levels, stuffed animals and pictures of your pets are also encouraged.
Parents or other caregivers are responsible for bringing live animals directly
to the field following carpool, live animals are not allowed inside the school
building for obvious reasons. Please
be conscious of how well your pet handles loud, stressful environments, and be
considerate of the school community and clean up after your pet. Parents
and caregivers are asked to remain with the class during the event. For safety
reasons, students need to stay with their classes as they travel to and from
the field. If you do need to leave the field with your child for some
reason, you must inform your child’s teacher prior to leaving and plan on
meeting them back in the classroom.

process skills to the scientific method. We will be focusing on the steps of
setting up a fair investigation. We started by looking at hypothesis and types
of variables.
