Academics

In language arts, we finished week 2 of Wordly Wise! Students were expected to finish Parts A-D of lesson two on their own and we worked through the passage (Part E) together. Next week students are responsible for completing Wordly Wise Parts A-E on their own. Wordly Wise lessons are always due on Thursdays, and we will take our spelling tests on Fridays. This week we also started our first writing project, which is a personal narrative.

In reading Miss Laird's class they have read through chapter 5 Running Out of Time. They also continued to discuss plot structure in Running Out of Time and other short stories.  In Mrs. Nash's class they read through chapter three of The Watson's Go to Birmingham. As we read, we focused on our comprehension strategies by annotating our reading with sticky notes. We also reviewed several strategies for using context clues to determine the meaning of unknown words and practiced these strategies throughout the week.

In social studies, we learned about the five Native American groups to first settle across North America. We also learned about Native American groups in the West. Additionally, we learned how to read and use parallel time lines. Next week, we will continue our unit by learning about Native Americans of the Southwest and of the Plains. We will take a test over this unit Tuesday, September 16th.

In science, we continued to study the process skills as we prepare to study the scientific method. This past week we looked at observing, classifying, and inferring. Next week we will learn about communicating and hypothesizing. We will also continue to share first quarter current events.
