Secret Santa
The fifth grade students will be having a Secret Santa
drawing within their homeroom classrooms on Monday, December 9th. The
week of December 16th they will bring three small gifts.
Students are asked to spend no more than $5 total on all three gifts. We
also discussed the possibility of using talents to make a gift. The students
should bring their first gift on Tuesday, December 17th. They
will bring their second gift on Wednesday, December 18th and their
third and final gift on Thursday, December 19th. On Thursday
their Secret Santa will be revealed. Please email us if you have any
questions or concerns.
Academics
In language arts, we are working on writing a business letter. Over Thanksgiving break the students picked a business they were interested in. This week the students learned proper format for writing a business letter. They are finishing typing these letters and we will send them out next week. This week we also finished the first Word Master Challenge. Now that this is over we are back to Wordly Wise. The students should be working on Lesson 10 and will be tested next Friday.
In reading, Mrs. Nash's class has read through chapter 13 of Small Steps: The Year I Got Polio by Peg Kehret. As we read, we are primarily focusing on summarizing the text and analyzing the changes in the main character throughout the story. We will finish the novel next week and take a test over the book. In Miss Laird's class they are working in literature circle. There are five different groups and five different books. The students are responsible for reading and discussing about their book everyday. Each night they will switch between the illustrator, vocabulary wizard, summarizer, and discussion director. Students should also be finishing their second quarter book reports. Book reports are due Friday, December 13th and students will begin sharing their projects with the class on Monday, December 16th.

This week in social studies, we started a project on the English colonies in North
America. Each student selected a region of colonies to learn about. They will
be working with a partner to develop an advertisement that persuades
settlers in the 1600s to come to their colonies to live. Students can create a
commercial, brochure, newspaper or magazine article, or write a song to
advertise their colonies. All project work can be completed in class and is due
Monday, December 16th.
In science, we learned about the relationship and movement between the earth, sun and moon and the moon phases. Next week we will review everything we have done in the space unit and prepare for a test on December 17th.
