What a busy week! Last week was packed full of fun opportunities including science club hosted by Mrs.Bartlett, a field trip to see A Christmas Carol, and our Presidents' Lock In! The upcoming week will end on a busy and positive note with caroling in the lobby each morning, Secret Santa gift exchanges, an ice skating field trip, and class parties! Thanks for all of your help and support as we continue to provide engaging, fun, and service oriented opportunities this holiday season. We hope the upcoming break will allow for much rest, relaxation, and family time!

*Advent Musical Offerings began on Monday, December 3rd. Students in third-fifth grade have an opportunity to share a musical gift during our Division Chapel. Students may play a musical instrument, sing a song, or offer any other musical talent. Students who wish to perform should sign up with Mrs. Watt.
Secret Santa
Students should have brought home a note about Secret Santa. We drew names in each homeroom on Monday, December 10. Students are asked to provide three small gifts for their Secret Santa; they will bring one gift per day on Tuesday, December 18, Wednesday, December 19, and Thursday, December 20. Students are encouraged to bring homemade treats and or crafts. All three gifts should total no more than $5 all together.
Science Club with Mrs. Bartlett
Thanks to all the parents who brought their children to school early last Thursday. We spent the morning learning about National Geographic's Genographic project and participating in an activity that replicated how DNA markers can be traced through generations and different geographical locations. Our next early morning science session will be Thursday, January 17 at 7:20.
Presidents' Lock In
Friday, December 14 was a full day of presidential learning. Students began the morning in the gym with some games that centered around our nations' leaders and famous landmarks. Students then participated in different stations throughout the morning and afternoon that allowed them to gain more insight about The White House, Monticello, Mt. Vernon, The Holocaust Museum, Eleanor Roosevelt, F.D.R's Social Security Program, and so much more. The day ended with snacks and movie clips about our first 27 Presidents. We will spend the next few months researching presidents and learning how to create a quality research paper including finding sources, taking notes, making an outline, writing bibliographies, and more! More information will be coming home after Christmas Break regarding this unit.

Academics
Mrs. Nash’s reading class is reading Small Steps by Peg Kehret. Students have read through chapter seventeen and will finish the book early this week. They will take a test over the novel on Wednesday, December 19. Some of Mrs. Jones's students are reading Island of the Blue Dolphins and others are reading The Cay. Both groups having finished chapter 17 of their novels. Students will finish their novels this week and take some short comprehension quizzes. Both classes submitted their book reports on Friday, December 14. Students will share the project portions of their book reports on Monday, December 17.
In social studies, students completed their projects about one of the three Colonial Regions. Students will share their advertisements on Monday, December 17 during a "Colonial Trade Fair."
In science students should be busy studying for the test which is Tuesday, December 18. It is over chapter 2 in the textbook which covers cells, tissues, and organs. Students will be finishing their second quarter current events this week.
Students are busy learning about action verbs, direct objects, verb tense, and irregular verbs. Students are also working on Wordly Wise 12.

SHOEBOX CHRISTMAS 2012
Is now Zipping into the New Year!
It has become a tradition at St. Paul’s for classes to bring toiletries for the patrons of the Church Pantry at Christmastime. The previous Shoebox Christmas has become Zipping into the New Year and is sponsored by the entire Lower School division, Grades One through Five.Your donated items will be packed with care into ‘zip-lock’ bags, and delivered as expressions of good will. Each student is invited to bring one or more items in the grade level suggestions. Travel or small sizes are requested.We will be very grateful if you also choose to send a compliment of gallon size Ziploc bags!Here is the suggested list:
First Grade:
Brush and comb, shampoo & conditioner
Second Grade:
Toothbrush, toothpaste, mouthwash
Third Grade:
Body wash, bar soap, or deodorant
Fourth Grade:
Hand and/or body lotion
Fifth Grade:
Disposable razors, shaving cream and pocket size tissues
Monday, Dec.3 begin bringing items
Thursday, Dec. 20 request for items to be brought in.
Students fill gift bags with items and good wishes for a Happy New Year.Bags will be delivered to Church Pantry on the 21.
