Curriculum Night, Parent Teacher Conference Sign-ups, Upcoming Field Trip, & Events of the Week

Thank you so much for taking time to join us for Lower School Curriculum Night!  We loved being able to chat with you about what your child can expect this year and all the exciting events that we have to look forward to!  We will be posting a separate page on this blog later today that will contain the curriculum packet we handed out in case you need an extra copy.  Thanks again for all you do to partner with us as we strive to provide a healthy, happy, structured, and challenging learning environment for your children!

In an effort to make sign-ups for Parent Teacher Conferences more accessible, we are using Sign-up Genius.  Please be sure to visit the link for your child's teacher and sign up for one Fall and one Spring conference.  We schedule fifth grade conferences for twenty minute time slots since we have found that this, on average, is the amount of time we usually spend visiting with each family.  If you feel like we may need more time we are happy to schedule additional time.

To reserve a time slot with Mrs. Nash please visit her sign-up link, www.SignUpGenius.com/go/20F0E4BAFAE28A46-parentteacher.

To reserve a time slot with Mrs. Jones please visit her sign-up link, www.SignUpGenius.com/go/20F0E4BAFAE29A57-parent.

Next Friday, September 14th, 5th grade will be visiting Heartland Presbyterian Center in Parkville, Missouri to participate in outdoor, team-building activities.  If your child has not returned his or her liability form we ask that they return it no later than Tuesday, September 11th.  Please help your child dress appropriately for the weather that day.  Students are required to wear tennis shoes, and we recommend they dress in layers since the temperatures will vary greatly between 10 A.M. and 2 P.M.  We also require each student to bring a water bottle so that they stay hydrated throughout the day.  If your child did not request a school provided sack lunch, he or she will need to bring a lunch from home that day.  Since this activity is outdoors we will need to cancel in the case of rain or storms. We will post any cancellation on the blog as soon as a decision is made.

We accomplished a lot during this four-day week in fifth grade!

In Language Arts, students edited, revised, and completed their final copies of their personal narratives, which was their first writing piece of the school year. It has been a joy to read their stories! Students also completed their third Wordly Wise packet, which was the first one they completely independently. We took the test over those words on Friday, and students received their fourth set of words. The next Wordly Wise packet is due next Thursday!

Both reading classes continued with their respective class novels. Mrs. Jones's class is reading Shiloh and Mrs. Nash's class is reading Holes. While reading, students practiced strategies for reading comprehension. All fifth graders also received their first book report assignment, which will be due Wednesday, October 10th. Students must select a Mark Twain Nominee to read for their report by next Wednesday, September 12th, and the title page is due Thursday, September 13th.

In social studies, we continued our study of Native Americans. Students first considered how they might have survived if they lived in Alaska or the Pacific-Northwest hundreds of years ago and then learned how  tribes in those areas adapted to their environment. We then spent time working with the online textbook and learning about Native Americans of the Southwest. Students will have their first test in social studies on Tuesday, September 25th. They will recieve a study guide next week for the test.

In science, students have worked on writing hypotheses and creating data charts. We will be reviewing line graphs and bar graphs next Monday. Students will have a test Monday, September 17th. They received a study guide to help them prepare. Current events are off to a great start!

Picture Day is Coming Up!
LifeTouch Photos-Sept. 18th for 1st-8th

We are using on-line ordering for individual and class photos.
(Your child will be in the yearbook, even if you choose not to order any of the photo reprints.)

There are 3 ways to order.
a)     Pre-order on-line www.mylifetouch.com
b)    Pre-order using the payment envelope attached to the flyer
   c) Wait until there are proof photos and order from those

If you pre-order, there are more options and the cost is lower. (Be sure to bring in the pre-order PICTURE PASS-your child will need this for the photographer-homeroom teachers will be collecting them prior to or on picture day.)

Please keep the LifeTouch flyer handy - it has the information that you will need to complete the ordering process. The flyer is coming home September 5th.

Class photos are part of the picture packets and your child will be featured in the center (larger) of the composite and the rest of the class and teachers will be around the edges.  These will not be printed until after make-up day, so no one will be missing from the class photos.
