March 26th - 30th

As third quarter ends and we begin the last quarter of the school year, there is a lot going on in fifth grade.  Below are some of the highlights from this week and important things to remember for the upcoming weeks.

Next year St. Paul's will celebrate 50 years and we are asking for your help.  Please have your child bring a white top (t-shirt, sweater, button down, etc.) to school.  We will be taking an aerial photograph and would like all students wearing a white shirt.  The actual date for the picture is Tuesday, April 10th and the rain date is Thursday, April 12th, but it would be wonderful if each student could have his or her shirt at school by Tuesday, April 3rd.  Thanks for your help with this endeavor.

We look forward to seeing you at parent/teacher conferences on Wednesday, April 4th and Thursday April 5th.  Conferences will be from 12 P.M. - 8 P.M on Wednesday and 7:30 A.M. - 12 P.M on Thursday.  You should have received a email reminder this past week about your specific time.  Fifth graders may participate in their conferences.  Please let us know ahead of time if your child will be joining us for the conference.

Save the date for Middle School Transition Night.  This will be held on Thursday, April 12th at from 

6 P.M. - 6:45 P.M. in the third floor commons.  We look forward to seeing you there!  Be sure to check last week's blog for more information from Mr. Van, the Middle School Division Head.

Don't forget standardized testing will be the week of April 16th.  Due to not being able to reschedule Exchange City, fifth graders will be testing on Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday of that week.    We ask for your help in making sure students get plenty of rest and a healthy breakfast those days.  Students are also encouraged to bring a snack for in between tests each morning.

Exchange City is quickly approaching and the anticipation is growing!  Students participated in an election this past week and elected Elle A. as City Manager of Exchange City and Caroline P. as the DJ. All students received their jobs and will spend the next two weeks applying for a business loan, setting prices, making products, and figuring out how they will run their business.  Students may visit the Exchange City website in order to become familiar with the accounting software their business will use or to visit helpful websites that will enhance their experience at Exchange City.  Thanks to the many parents who helped us interview and all the parents who volunteered to go with us.  We appreciate all of your help!

In Science, students have been learning all about space.  They will embark on an independent study project during the week of April 9th - April 13th which will allow them to use class time to delve deeper into a specific space topic that interests them.  

In Language Arts, students are studying adjectives and working on Wordly Wise 18.  We will begin preparing for the third WordMaster test very soon.

Mrs. Jones's class is reading Holes by Louis Sachar and Mrs. Nash's class is reading Jayhawker by Patricia Beatty.  Students are practicing reading strategies and participating in class discussions as they read, study, and enjoy these novels.

Students took a test this week in Social Studies over the American Revolution and are beginning their next unit which focuses on The Constitution.
