Second Week of School

It has been another successful week in fifth grade! Students have continued to get familiar with the routines and procedures for our classes. Wordly Wise 2 packets were passed out to students on Friday, August 26th and will be due Thursday, September 1st. The spelling test will be Friday, September 2nd. Students will also receive Wordly Wise 3 on Friday. In Language Arts, we have also been writing personal narratives. We anticipate finishing final copies early next week. In reading, we have studied the seven comprehension strategies of effective readers. Students will be encouraged to use these on regular basis to improve comprehension. We have also begun class novels. In social studies, we started our first unit, "Native People of North America." We will continue this unit for the next few weeks. In science, students have been practicing measuring using graduated cylinders, spring scales, balance scales, beakers and meter sticks. They will spend the next week reviewing data charts and graphs.

We look forward to seeing you at Curriculum night on Thursday, September 8th. Mrs. Watt and the specials teachers will be available at 6:15 to visit with you about classes and the Lower School Division. Teachers will begin classroom presentations at 6:45.

On Friday, September 9th, fifth grade will go to Heartland Presbyterian Center in Parkville, Missouri for a low ropes challenge course. This field trip focuses on working collaboratively with classmates, overcoming challenges and using life skills. All students will need to bring a sack lunch or order one from the school cafeteria. Order forms will be sent home Wednesday, August 31st and must be returned no later than Friday, September 2nd.
