Academics 

In Language Arts, both classes started the Presidents Unit this week.  Students picked a president to research, collected at least 3 different resources, and learned how to write source cards for each resource.  Next week, students will take notes from their resources and begin writing their outlines. 

In Reading this week, Miss O'Connor's class began reading Watsons Go to Birmingham.  Before reading, we studied The Civil Rights Movement.  Michelle Johnson, our diversity coordinator, also came in to speak to our class.  We have read chapters 1-4, focusing on making connections to the text and asking questions while reading.  In Mrs. Nash's class, students began reading Small Steps by Peg Kehret. We have read through chapter five of the non-fiction book.  As we read, we are focusing on reviewing our seven comprehension strategies.

In Social Studies, we have started our unit on the American Revolution. This week, we focused on the first few events leading up to the war, including the French and Indian War and the Proclamation of 1763. We are also looking at how not all people felt the colonies should break free from England since there were many different political beliefs during this time. Each student has taken on a revolutionary identity, and they have to decide where they belong on the political spectrum. Next week we will complete several activities with these identities.

This week in Science, we started our unit on the human body!  We began by taking an in depth look at animal cells and how they differ from plant cells.  Next week, we will learn the organization of cells, tissues, organs, and organ systems.  Throughout this unit, we will focus on the circulatory, respiratory, digestive, muscular, and skeletal systems.  Students have an optional enrichment opportunity to research either the endocrine, immune, lymphatic, or nervous systems outside of class.  Students who choose to participate will present their findings at a celebration before school on Friday, February 5th.
