*We invite you to join us for our Presidents' Celebration on Wednesday, February 10th at 2:00 pm in the North MPR. Students will give speeches, sing patriotic songs, and share their online portfolios that showcase all of their work from the unit. We will also enjoy cookies and beverages. The celebration will last until around 3:15. We ask that students dress up for this celebration. For boys, this may be slacks and a collared shirt. Ties are optional. Girls may wear dresses or dress pants with a nice top. Students are welcome to wear patriotic colors for this event, but it is not required. We hope to see you there!

**We are looking forward to our final class party of the year on February 12th at 2:30. In fifth grade, we ask students to prepare Valentines for each person in their homeroom class. We ask that they put names on the Valentines and have given them class lists so they can spell names correctly. Students are welcome to also bring Valentine's for the other class; however, we ask that if they choose to do so, that they have enough for everyone in the other class. We have asked students that any valentines that are personalized and for a specific individual not be brought to school. We appreciate your help in keeping Valentine's Day an inclusive, whole class activity by limiting individual and personalized valentines to outside of school hours.

Academics
In Language Arts, both classes typed the rough drafts of their research papers. They also spent time individually and peer editing and revising their work. Students will finalize papers next week. We have also continued through rough two of our WordMasters competition. Students should be studying their new set of words to prepare for the challenge that will be held on Friday, February 19th.

In Reading this week, Miss O'Connor's class finished Watsons Go to Birmingham.  We took a comprehension test over the book and completed a short in class project.  Before starting our new novels, we are going to compare and contrast the movie with the book. Mrs. Nash's class completed an in-class project over Small Steps and took a test over the book. Next week, we will begin a literature circles unit in which students will chose from five novels to read.

In Social Studies, we continued our study of the American Revolution by learning about the final events leading up to the start of the Revolutionary War, including the Tea Act, the Boston Tea Party, and the First Continental Congress.  As we learn about these events, students are completing a foldable timeline that will serve as their study guide for the unit. We also spent time in social studies writing the first draft of our President speeches. The first draft is due Monday.

In Science this week, we continued learning about the circulatory system.  This week, we focused on heart rate and how to keep our hearts healthy.  Next week, we will move on to the respiratory system.  Next Friday, February 5th, we will have our celebration at 7:15am for those students who chose to participate in the science enrichment.  We also scheduled our test over the human body which will be Wednesday, February 17th.
