Academics

In language arts, both classes continued working on our personal narratives.  We reviewed the difference between revising and editing and worked on individual and peer revising.  Students will finish the personal narrative next week with editing and publishing.

We also completed Wordly Wise list 3 and assigned list 4 for next week.  As a reminder, last week we added a link to the right side of the blog that will help you access the current week's word list.  You can click on "student" and locate our book, which is "Book 5".  From there, you can select the correct word list as well as a few helpful review games.

In reading, both classes started their first class novel!  Mrs. Nash’s class began reading Running Out of Time by Margaret Peterson Haddix. We have read through chapter five of the book. As we read, we are focusing on practicing our seven comprehension strategies. Next week, we will practice annotating while we read the story.

Miss O'Connor's class began reading Small Steps: The Year I Got Polio by Peg Kehret.  We read through chapter six and focused on three comprehension strategies as we read: making connections, visualizing, and making inferences.

In social studies this week, we finished our geography review by finishing our study of latitude and longitude. We played a round of latitude and longitude bingo to test our skills. We also began our study of Native Americans. We learned about the very first groups in North America this week, and next week students will be working in groups to study Native Americans in a specific part of the continent. Each group will complete a project in which they put together a PowerPoint or poster. Students will get the instructions and criteria for this project on Monday, and all of the work for the project will be completed in class.

We continued working on scientific process skills this week in science.  We reviewed classification and then took an in depth look at the three types of variables: independent, dependent, and controlled.  Students worked in pairs and used task cards to pick out each of  the three variables, along with any quantitative and qualitative observations listed in the cards.  Next week, we will work on hypothesizing and do an investigation to help us understand the importance of using the process skills.
