Academics

In Language Arts, we began our first grammar unit of the year over sentences. This week, we focused on independent vs. dependent clauses, sentence fragments, and types of sentences.  We will spend the next several weeks working through this unit, and students will take a unit test on Thursday, October 15th. 

We also completed Wordly Wise list 5 and assigned list 6 for next week.  As a reminder, there is a link to the right side of the blog that will help you access the current week's word list.  You can click on "student" and locate our book, which is "Book 5".  From there, you can select the correct word list as well as a few helpful review games.  

In reading, both classes continued their class novels. Mrs. Nash’s class has read through Chapter 15 of Running Out of Time. As we read, we are continuing to focus on vocabulary and comprehension. In addition, this week we focused on direct and indirect characterization as we studied our main character, Jessie.

Miss O'Connor's class finished reading Small Steps: The Year I Got Polio by Peg Kehret.  We focused on making connections and extending the text.  On Friday, we took a comprehension test over the novel and went over project ideas.  Next week, we will work on our projects in class and present toward the end of the week.   

In social studies this week, students finished their group projects about a specific region in which Native Americans lived. We will share these projects on Monday before beginning our next unit of study about the age of exploration. We will begin this next unit with larger in-class projects in which students will focus on the question, “Who really discovered the Americas?” More information about this project will be shared next week.

In Science this week, we built on our prior knowledge of hypotheses and then learned about the many different ways to collect and communicate data.  Next week, we will apply everything we have learned this year to conduct a scientific investigation.
