*Fifth graders participate in the Middle School Book Fair in the third floor commons instead of the book exchange they have done in past years around this time of year. Miss Laird's class will attend from 1:30-2:00, and Mrs. Nash's class will go from 2:00-2:30.

Academics
In language arts, Miss Laird's class finished up persuasive essays. Mrs. Nash's class began our final grammar unit of the year, this will focus on adverbs, pronouns, and prepositions. Miss Laird's class will begin next week. We also completed Wordly Wise 18, and students can begin Wordly Wise 19 for next week (only 2 weeks of Wordly Wise left). 

In reading, both classes began working on their final novel unit of the year, book contract. Students were able to choose their book and projects for this project. They are responsible for completing daily journals, which will be collected weekly, a story plot map, book review and four other projects of their choice. The final due date for this project will be May, 20th.  Mrs. Nash's class have chosen to read one of the following books: Daphne's Book by Mary Downing Hahn, When Hitler Stole Pink Rabbit by Judith Kerr, My Brother Sam is Dead by Christopher and James Lincoln Collier, or Out of My Mind by Sharon Draper. Miss Laird's class chose between: When Hitler Stole Pink Rabbit by Judith Kerr, My Brother Sam is Dead by Christopher and James Lincoln Collier, Out of My Mind by Sharon Draper, Jayhawker by Patricia Beatty, and Library Card by Jerry Spinelli.

In social studies, students worked on their Unit 5 group projects. We will present these projects in class early next week before moving on to our final unit of the year over the Civil War. Students can also be working on the social studies enrichment opportunity I provided last week. We will have a celebration on Tuesday, May 12th before school to share projects.   

In science, we discussed the movement of Earth and our moon and the relationship with the sun. We then discussed how these relationships impacts our seasons, climate, and calendars. Next week we will discuss the moon, moon phases and high/low tides.
