Academics
In language arts, we completed our fourth wordly wise lesson. We tested on Friday and were assigned lesson 5 to begin working on as well. We have encouraged students to start on their Wordly Wise work over the weekend or early in the week so they are not overloaded with a lot of work on Wednesday evenings. This also allows them to come to us with any questions they have before the work is due. Both classes are finishing up their personal narratives. Both classes worked on revising and editing and are preparing to publish early next week.
In reading, Mrs. Nash's class read Chapters 5 -7 of The Watson’s Go to Birmingham. Miss Laird's class is on chapter 14. As we read, we spent time annotating with sticky notes. This strategy helps students stop and really consider what they are reading as they work their way through the text. We also had group discussions over the first five chapters of the book. Both classes should also be working on reading book report books independently at home.

*Pet Blessing:
The Pet Blessing will take place on the upper field at 8:30 on Friday, September 19th. While live animals are welcome in all grade levels, stuffed animals and pictures of your pets are also encouraged. Parents or other caregivers are responsible for bringing live animals directly to the field following carpool, live animals are not allowed inside the school building for obvious reasons.Please be conscious of how well your pet handles loud, stressful environments, and be considerate of the school community and clean up after your pet. Parents and caregivers are asked to remain with the class during the event. For safety reasons, students need to stay with their classes as they travel to and from the field. If you do need to leave the field with your child for some reason, you must inform your child’s teacher prior to leaving and plan on meeting them back in the classroom.

SRI- Earlier this week your child completed the Scholistic Reading Inventory (SRI), a classroom-based reading test. SRI is designed to evaluate students's reading abilities, monitor studens reading progress, and set goals for reading growth. Students will complete this assessment 3 three times throughout the school year to monitor growth and areas for improvement.
In social studies, we spent time reviewing for our unit one test, which will be Tuesday, September 16th. Students have a study guide and a list of vocabulary terms to know to help them prepare for the test. They can also use our textbook website to take the quizzes and play the games in the Unit 1 section; however, we spent time with this material in class so it is not a requirement. We will start an in-class group project after our test next week.
In science, we did an investigation intended to teach the importance of the process skills and following the scientific method steps. Next week, the students will conduct an experiment to determine the absorbency of the cloth materials. We are also continuing to share and discuss weekly current events.
