*On May 2, we will be eating lunch in our classrooms due to the Pillars of SPEDS event held in the cafeteria. This means that every student will need to bring a lunch from home. There will be no lunch available through the school on this day.


*** Mercado Day***

On May 9 at 2:00, students in fifth grade will celebrate Mercado day.  Students were  assigned a Spanish-speaking country and have been researching facts about it to share with you.  Your child has a script to memorize for that day. This script was written in class and I have checked it for accuracy.  I am also making an audio file so students will know how to pronounce the words.  Over the weekend,  I will make the audio files and email them to your child.  Please, help him/her practice his/her presentation daily so the script will be memorized by the 9^th. That day, students will have an iPad with a Thinglink display  that will guide their presentation.

Students will also be “selling” an item representative of their country during the second part of the market day.  These items are to be done completely at home. There is no need to spend too much money on them. Examples of products are:

·         bookmarks with the colors of the flag or with pictures of the country, the name of the country written in fancy letters.

·         figurines made of clay

·         bracelets

·         homemade piñatas or rain sticks

·         masks

·         paper flowers

  I am asking students to bring about 20 items to sell. There are only 2 students per class who have a food or drink “permit.”

Parents are invited to come to the North MPR at 2:00 and tour the presentations. At about 2:30, parents will be given 20 pesos to purchase items in the market.  These pesos were designed by the students, too.

Students are working hard on their presentations and we are all looking forward to this fun activity!

Here are some phrases that parents can use to make the experience more authentic:

¿Qué es ésto? – What is this?

¿Cuánto cuesta? – How much does it cost?

¡Muy bien! – Very good!

¡Qué barato! – How cheap!

¡Qué caro! – How expensive!

¡Delicioso! – Delicious!

Academics

Thank you to all of our parent volunteers that accompanied us to Exchange City this week. We had a great day and the kids had such a great time running the city!

 

In language arts,  we finished WordMasters our third  and final challenge for the school year. The winners of the blue and gold group high scorers will be announced soon. Both classes began writing the technical or explanatory writing project. This is the last writing project for the year. 

In reading, Mrs. Nash's class presented their literature circle projects to the class. Miss Laird's class finished Holes.This week watched the movie to compare and contrast. Both classes also  began book contract. Each student selected a book and signed a contract for the grade they plan to earn on the project. Every student must complete three required assignments, and then they can choose from a list of fifteen other optional assignments. The number of optional assignments they complete varies based on the grade for which they have contracted. Students should have brought home a packet that included the contract. This packet describes all of the assignments connected to the book contract. Most of this work will be completed on student’s individual google accounts.  Students are several chapters into their book contract book so far and will continue with this project next week.

 

This week in social studies, students continued to work on their unit five projects. Each class has two more class periods to complete their work, and we will begin sharing projects on Thursday of next week. Students also received a social studies enrichment opportunity that connects to our final unit of the year over the Civil War. If students wish to participate in this enrichment opportunity, they will have a chance to share their findings on Friday, May 9 from 7:15-8:00 am.

 

In science we continued our health and wellness unit. We discussed the importance of having a balanced diet and what that includes. We also discusses the importance of sleep especially in growing children. Students worked in groups to gather information and then presented their findings to the rest of the class.  

**It's time to order school supplies for next year!  You may pre-purchase a school supply pack for next fall.  The packets are ordered through Innisbrook School Supplies and are priced at the school’s cost.  This opportunity is offered as a convenience for St. Paul’s families.  Parents are free to choose the supply pack or shop on their own. 

Order dates:  Tuesday, April 15 – Friday, May 2.  There are two ways to place your order:

1)  Order online at www.ordermypack.com , select Buy School Supplies, and enter our school number: 120688.  Pay with a credit card at checkout.  There is no longer a convenience charge for this service!
