Thank you for everyone that attended curriculum night last night. For those that could not make it your child bring home a curriculum packet and information regarding your log-in information for net classroom. Net classroom is new for fifth grade this year and it allows students and parents the ability to access grades online. We also just wanted to remind you that this will be available beginning Monday September 9th and that teachers will be updating this every 1-2 weeks.

In Language Arts both classes finished week 3 of Wordly Wise. This was the first week the students were expected to finish this on their own at home. We are aware that this has been an issue for some and we are working on this situation. If your student is having issues have your student see their homeroom teacher and we can provide an alternative for them. Also this week students in both classes worked on finishing up their personal narratives. Next week the students will begin working on their first grammar unit. The focus will be on sentences.
Both reading continued to read their class novels and practiced their reading strategies as they read. Miss Laird's class read through chapter 8 of Running Out of Time by Margaret Peterson Haddix. This week the students focused specifically on character development and vocabulary. Next week they will focus on visualizing while reading. Mrs. Nash's class read through chapter 24 of Holes by Louis Sachar. This week the students were introduced to strategies to monitoring thinking and asking questions while reading.
In Science this week we wrapped up the scientific method overview. They are preparing to do their first experiment. Next week they will do an already developed experiment that follows the scientific method procedures. The students will be required to identify all parts of the scientific method.
** If you are curious about the specific learning objectives for each unit they are posted on the previous blog post. Have a great weekend!
In social studies this week, we focused on Native Americans
in two different regions. We learned about Native Americans of the Pacific
Northwest as well as the Southwest. We are focusing primarily on how they
adapted to their environment. Next week, we will wrap up our unit by learning
about Native American of the Plains and the Woodlands. Our first test will be
Tuesday, September 24th. Students will receive a study guide for
this test next week.
