We had a great trip to the Heartland Center yesterday. The day turned out to be bright any sunny without even a sprinkle of rain! We did our best to stay hydrated and in the shade. Here are a few pictures from the adventure.

Other Reminders-
- Information about the buddy run went home yesterday and needs to be returned by September 27th.

- Next Friday is the Pet Blessing. In fifth grade we do invite students to bring a picture of their pet to school, but we ask that they do not bring their actual live pet to school on Friday (this is for the younger grades). If your child wants to bring a picture bring it by Wednesday to be included on the Poster.

Academics
Both reading classes continued to read their class novels and practiced their reading strategies as they read. Miss Laird's class read through chapter 15 of Running Out of Time by Margaret Peterson Haddix. This week we took some time to process through our novel thus far and looked at comparing and contrasting characters as they have developed throughout the novel. Mrs. Nash's class read through Chapter 41 of Holes. We will finish the book next week and will take a test over the novel on Monday, September 30th.
In social studies this week, we spent time reviewing and
preparing for our first test. The test over Native Americans will be Tuesday,
September 24th. Students should be using their study guide and “Unit
1 Terms to Know” to help them prepare for the test. After we have completed the
test next week, we will begin an in-class group project that introduces our
next unit about the exploration and colonization of North America.
In Science we completed our first experiment. Students were surprised to learn how much dye M&M's actually contain (although it did not stop many of them from enjoying a couple after the work was complete). They wrote up an entire lab report and followed the procedure step by step. Next week, the student will create an experiment using materials already provided for them. They will be required to create a complete lab report using the scientific method.
