Academics
In language arts, we focused on getting to know our classmates. Students also spent some time considering what kind of learner they are through a multiple intelligence survey. Next week we will begin our spelling program called Wordly Wise. Students will complete this spelling program online, and for the first two weeks we will complete all parts of the program in class. We will also begin learning about the traits of good writing as we prepare to begin our first writing assignment of the year, a personal narrative.
In both Miss Laird's and Mrs. Nash's reading classes, students completed an activity about their summer reading book, Castle in the Attic. Next week we will review seven comprehension strategies and then begin our first class novels of the year. Miss Laird's class will read Running Out of Time by Margaret Peterson Haddix and Mrs. Nash's class will read Holes by Louis Sachar.
In social studies, we reviewed what units we will focus on throughout the year. Students also completed an activity in which they focused on either the word "America" or "history." They worked in groups to design posters that represent each of the words. Next week we will begin our first unit of the year over Native Americans.
In science, we focused on what students will learn over the course of the year. Next week, students will begin learning about the scientific process, which will be our first unit of the year.
