A Note Regarding Technology Use in Fifth Grade

Technology Use

Earlier this week, we sent home a letter regarding the use of a fifth grade google account to store student work throughout the year. We have received some very helpful feedback from parents regarding concerns they have with students using this resource and want to share with all of you that using google docs is not required of fifth graders.  We understand your concerns, and while we would have liked to create an account for each student to ensure total privacy we are unable to do so because users are required to be 13 years of age to have their own account.

We completely understand if parents are not comfortable having students use our fifth grade account, and students will not be required to use it. We can have students continue to use Microsoft Word on individual computers to complete their writing projects. However, due to scheduling needs we sometimes need to switch between laptop carts here at school, and students can have trouble accessing their work from another computer if it hasn’t been saved exactly right. It may be helpful for students to have a flash drive on which they can store their work so they do not lose valuable work time.

Thank you again for sharing your thoughts and concerns with us. We appreciate any and all feedback we receive from you so that we can work to create a positive environment for our students.
