We finished off a busy week with a wonderful celebration in honor of St. Paul's on Friday morning. Students enjoyed the parade and ceremonies. Thank you to all of you who were able to join us and help with the fun festivities!

Academics
In language arts, students are working on the rough drafts of their research paper. We will continue working on rough drafts through next Wednesday, and they will be due on Thursday. We also started our second WordMasters challenge this week. The WordMasters test will be Monday, February 25th.
Mrs. Jones's class is currently reading chapter 5 of Jayhawker. Students in Mrs. Nash's reading class read through either chapter 13 of Hatchet or chapter 16 of Running Out of Time. We are continuing to focus on reading comprehension strategies and vocabulary while we read.
This week in science, students finished reviewing the digestive and urinary systems. Students will have a test over chapter 3 on Monday, January 28. Students who participated in the science enrichment challenge are invited stay after school on Friday, February 1 for snacks, games, and presentations.
In social studies, students experienced what it was like for colonists to be taxed by Great Britain when Mrs. Nash told them they would have to pay 10 cents to use classroom supplies such as printed paper. This ignited a very lively class discussion and provoked a lot of strong opinions! Students also found out who they represented in our political spectrum activity last week and we began learning about the Boston Massacre.

Parent Teacher Conferences with Mrs. Jones & Mr. Ward
Due to the upcoming arrival of Baby Jones, Mrs. Jones & her long term sub, Mr. Hunter Ward, will be having Parent Teacher Conferences on Monday, February 4, Tuesday, February 5, and Wednesday, February 6 from 4 P.M. - 6:20 P.M. We will follow the normal 20 minute schedule that we use in fifth grade, and you can sign up for your conference on Sign Up Genius. The link to the sign-up is http://www.signupgenius.com/go/20F0E4BAFAE29A57-parent. These will take the place of conferences that would normally occur on March 7 and 8. We look forward to visiting with you!
Presidents' Unit
Students started completed outlines and are now working on their rough drafts for their research paper. Rough drafts will be due Thursday, January 31st. You received a letter right after Christmas break that discussed some changes we have made this year. We are successfully using Google drive and docs to create our outlines and research papers. The students will also be using LiveBinders to create online portfolios of their work. The two user names and passwords students will need are included in the letter that came home so be sure to have your child bring it home and keep it in a handy place.
Shadowing in Sixth Grade
Fifth graders have continued to shadow this week. Each day four fifth graders will attend Middle School chapel and the first three classes of the day. This will give them a glimpse into life as a middle schooler while minimizing the amount of time they miss from their own classes.
Growth & Development Presentation
Last week students brought home a letter discussing our next science
unit which includes a conversation over puberty and physical changes
that occur during this time. We have asked students to share the
letters with you and return them to us so that we know the letter did
make it home. However, we also wanted to highlight the details for you
here just in case. Our short science unit will focus on nutrition and
sleep as well as puberty. The boys will meet with Mr. N and the girls
will meet with Mrs. Nash and Mrs. Jones on Thursday, January 31 at 2:30
for a short movie and question and answer session. The conversation is
meant to be an introduction to puberty, but if you would like more
information or classes for your child in this area please see Liz's
Monday Morning Memo from January 14 that highlights the two classes
offered through St. Paul's church. This info can be accessed at http://spedshead.blogspot.com/.
The registration for these classes ends soon and there is a mandatory
parent meeting, so if you are interested you may want to look into it
soon. Please let us know if you have any questions at all. Our goal is
to keep is short and sweet yet informative and to make it as easy and
comfortable as possible for the students.
Resource
The
Professional Development Committee purchased several webinars offered
through ISACS for our faculty and staff this year. The latest webinar
was titled, "Sugar & Spice But Not Always Nice: Gender, Bias, &
Aggression in Adolescent Girls." It was hosted by Rosetta Lee of the
Seattle Girls' School and the faculty who attended found the information
helpful. We wanted to include access information for you in case
you're interested in using this as a resource. If you would like to
view the archived webinar you can access it by going to http://www.isacs.org/page/472128_Learning_Bridge_Webinar_Login.asp. You'll then scroll down to the bottom of the page, select “1/15/13 Sugar & Spice But Not Always Nice: Gender, Bias & Aggression in Adolescent Girls” and

Volunteer Opportunity
We are in need of a parent volunteer or two who would be willing to help cover novels with contact paper. It's an easy job once you get the hang of it, but it does require a little patience and attention to detail. If you are interested send us an email of when you're available. Though covering our novels is a little time consuming, it helps us prolong their life and our investment, and we truly appreciate the help.
